Going to MAX?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

If you’re planning to attend Adobe MAX this year: I’ll be getting in on Saturday afternoon, and was wondering if any other Flash Lite folks would be interested in getting together for drinks on Saturday night.

If you’re interested, email me directly (darren at ludicroussoftware dot com) and let me know when you get in and what hotel you’re staying in. I’ll figure out a decently central meeting point, let you all know the when and the where, and we can head out from there. And if you know of a good place in the area of the conference centre for drinks, let me know that too! Or we can make that part up as we go along.

Travel plans for MAX

Monday, July 20th, 2009

My travel plans for Adobe MAX are all set. I’ll be arriving in L.A. on the Saturday (October 3) before MAX and heading back to Winnipeg on the morning of Thursday the 8th. I’m booked at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, which is about a mile away from the conference site. It would’ve been nice to stay a little closer, but the rates at the conference hotels were so much higher than the rate I’m paying at the Biltmore, I could travel back and forth by cab about 5 times a day if I wanted to and still save money.

Looking forward to seeing the Flash Lite diehards once again! It’s been an interesting year so far, and there will no doubt be a good deal of discussion about how things are going in the various corners of the mobile Flash world.

Now I just need to register for the conference itself!

MAX 2008 Tips and Tricks Demo Files

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Last week’s MAX conference was a blast – Alessandro did a great job of summarizing all of the exciting new developments in the mobile space for Flash developers, so I won’t rehash those here. Adobe did a fantastic job of putting together an excellent set of sessions on Flash Lite/mobile development, and the other organized events were equally, if not even more, worthwhile to attend. On a general note, it was great to meet a wide range of people who were either involved in or were exploring mobile development – beyond the usual Flash Lite suspects I met a bunch of people from companies all over the world that are seriously considering Flash Lite, and I think that speaks to the current and future health of the mobile part of the Flash ecosystem.

On a personal note, I had a great time presenting in the “Twenty Tips and Tricks” session – unfortunately I think that Monday’s session was not the best of my three cracks at it, but that’s the one that’ll get posted to Adobe TV eventually! As promised, I’m also posting the files that I used to demo/explain some of my tips and tricks. Feel free to use any of the code in your projects in any way you wish. No need to provide any kind of attribution, but if you find these code samples informative and/or actually do use them in one of your projects, please drop me an email to let me know! The files are all for the latest version of Flash, so you’ll need CS4 installed to use them.

Hope to see you at MAX 2009 in Los Angeles – don’t know if I’ll be presenting again (although I’d like to) but even if I’m not I’ll definitely be there!

Other Flash Lite Sessions at MAX

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

As if MAX isn’t going to be busy enough this year, I’ve just noticed that in addition to all of the regular sessions scheduled, there are a few other Flash Lite/mobile gaming-related events happening that might be worth a look:

  1. On Monday night there’s a birds-of-a-feather (scroll down to see the BOF schedule) session entitled, The Game Industry: Serious Games, Simulations and 3D Worlds, Casual Games, and Mobile Content. This is taking place from 8:30 to 9:30 in room 2006, Moscone West.
  2. As part of FITC‘s Unconference, there will be a session on Flash Lite’s future in an iPhone Dominated Landscape. The session is at 12:00 on Wednesday the 19th, and I think the Unconferences are happening on Level 2 of Moscone West, but don’t take my word on that. This is billed as a panel session (scroll down the page to read the description), but no word on who the panelists will be.
  3. Also part of FITC’s Unconference and not specific to Flash Lite but more on mobile gaming is a session on Monday the 17th entitled, Flash Developers Guide to building iPhone Applications. Looks like it’s a walk through the iPhone SDK and an intro to Objective-C (warm up your square brackets keys!), and how to approach iPhone dev from a Flash perspective. (Personally, I’m starting to think the easiest way is to plunk down the money for Unity and its iPhone plug-in and write a lot of JavaScript, but I could be wrong).

Unforunately, the session in which I’m speaking runs on each of the three days of the conference, and happens to be at the same time as the FITC Unconference sessions, so I’ll have to miss them both. I am curious as to who is speaking at that Flash Lite session, though.

Back from MAX

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

(Okay, technically I got back from MAX almost a week ago, but I think I’m just now getting caught up!)

Adobe MAX 2007 was a fantastic time; if you do anything with Adobe products then you owe it to yourself to attend MAX. My one complaint – and it’s a good one to have – is that the three-day (four, if you count the pre-event training sessions) conference is actually too short. It needs to be about twice as long if I were to ever have a chance of attending all the sessions I want to see.

It was great to meet a couple of Mobile and Device developers that I hadn’t met before, and to see again the ones that I’d already met (photo here, or here if you want to put names to faces). Although there’s nothing like hanging out with a MaD bunch to help you develop a case of N95 envy!

Next year San Francisco!

MAX Day 0

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

Arrived early yesterday, had a good time looking around Chicago and a great time hanging out with the MaD bunch. Pre-event training (Flex 3) awaits!
